SaareGane

Privacy

There is no account, no cookie, no analytics and no tracker on this site. This page describes exactly what is stored and who your browser connects to, because a claim like that is only worth anything if it can be checked.

What SaareGane does not do

  • There is no sign-up and no login. There is no account to have.
  • SaareGane sets no cookies.
  • There is no analytics, no tag manager, no advertising pixel and no third-party tracker of any kind. Nothing on this site is measuring you.
  • Nothing is sold, shared or handed to anybody, because nothing is collected to hand.
  • The fonts are served from this domain. They are downloaded once when the site is built rather than fetched from Google while you read, so opening a page here makes no request to Google.

What is kept in your browser

Your settings live on your own device, in your browser’s local storage. They never leave it and SaareGane cannot read them. There are three:

  • saaregane:player:v2 holds what was playing, where you had got to in it, your volume, and whether shuffle was on. This is what lets a room pick up where you left off.
  • saaregane:favourites:v1 holds the songs you have starred.
  • saaregane:session holds a random string this tab invents for itself. It sits in session storage rather than local storage, which means the browser throws it away when the tab closes. See the listener count below.

Clearing your browser data clears all three, and they go for good, because there is no copy of them anywhere else. That is the trade for having no account: nothing to leak, and nothing that follows you to another device.

The listener count

The small number in the header is the only thing this site sends anywhere. While a tab is open it says “still here” every twenty seconds, and what it sends is the random string above plus whether something is currently playing. Nothing else is sent: no address, no song, no page.

Those check-ins are counted and forgotten: an id that has not been heard from for seventy-five seconds is dropped, so the store holds only whoever is listening right now. The string is invented by the tab and destroyed with it, so it is not an identity and cannot be joined to a visit tomorrow.

Who else your browser talks to

SaareGane does not host any music, and being honest about that means being honest about what it costs. Two kinds of request go from your browser to the public catalogue this app plays from, and its servers will see your IP address the way any site you visit does:

  • Album art. The small artwork beside each song is loaded straight from the catalogue’s image CDN rather than copied through this site.
  • The audio itself. Pressing play asks this site for the song, and this site answers with a redirect to the file on the catalogue’s CDN. Your browser then fetches the audio from there directly. It is done that way so that seeking works properly, and it does mean the connection is between you and the CDN.

The paintings, the fonts, the icons and the pages themselves are all served from this domain.

Server logs

This site is hosted on Vercel, which keeps ordinary short-lived request logs the way every web host does. SaareGane adds nothing to them and builds no profile from them.

Children

The site collects nothing from anybody, of any age, so there is nothing here that treats a child differently from anyone else.
